Probability dictionary
- Probability
- The chance that a specific outcome happens, often written as a fraction, percentage, or “1 in N” figure.
- Odds
- A way of expressing how likely or unlikely an outcome is. In Lottist, “1 in N” means one matching ticket among N possible tickets.
- Combination
- A selection where order does not matter. Choosing 4, 12, and 23 is the same combination as choosing 23, 4, and 12.
- Independent event
- An outcome that is not changed by previous outcomes. A past draw does not make a number due in a later draw.
- Expected value
- The long-run average result across many repeated trials. It does not predict what will happen on one ticket.
- Gambler’s fallacy
- The mistaken belief that a random outcome is “due” because it has not appeared recently.
